Meat Cove Mountain Trail

Meat Cove Mountain Trail

Steep, rewarding climb behind the village to a Cape Breton summit panorama.

A short but lung-burning trail that climbs from the Meat Cove campground area to a ridge above the village, with sweeping views over the Gulf, the cliffs of Cape St. Lawrence, and on a clear day to Newfoundland in the distance.

On the trail

The path is steep, rooty, and unrelenting. Around 200 metres of vertical gain on a route just over a kilometre to the summit. The descent is the same way you came up.

What you'll see

  • Panoramic views over Meat Cove village far below
  • Bald eagles and seabirds working the cliff updrafts
  • Whales offshore on a calm summer afternoon (binoculars help)

What to bring

  • Real hiking shoes — runners will not do
  • Water, snacks, a layer for the wind at the top
  • Bug spray in early summer

Combine it with

  • A stop at the village beach below
  • Driving the rough road into Capstick on the way back

Getting there

Free. Park near the campground; trailhead is signed.
